Medicare Part B

Doctor Visits and Outpatient Care

Medicare Part B covers a wide range of healthcare services, including doctor visits, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and various medical and surgical services — both inpatient and outpatient. It also helps pay for physical therapy, speech therapy, diagnostic tests, and medical supplies.

Generally, you can apply for Medicare Part B starting three months before your 65th birthday month and up to three months after your birthday month, giving you a seven-month enrollment window.

What Medicare Part B Covers:

  • Services provided by doctors and other healthcare professionals

  • Outpatient care at clinics or hospitals

  • Home health care services (when medically necessary)

  • Durable medical equipment (such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, and similar equipment)

  • A variety of preventive services, including screenings, vaccinations, and annual "Wellness" visits

What Medicare Part B Does Not Cover:

  • Services not considered medically necessary, such as fitness programs, alternative medicine, cosmetic procedures, and elective surgeries

  • Routine vision, hearing, and dental care — including eye exams, eyeglasses, hearing aids, dental extractions, and dentures

  • Routine foot care, such as toenail clipping or the removal of corns and calluses (unless related to specific medical conditions like diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis, chronic kidney disease, malnutrition, or vein inflammation caused by blood clots)

  • Long-term care in nursing homes or assisted living facilities

  • Assistance with daily living activities, such as dressing, bathing, eating, or using the bathroom

  • Home safety equipment, including emergency alert systems, grab bars, bathtub lifts or seats, stair lifts, and elevators

  • Medical services received outside of the United States (except under very limited circumstances)

How Much Does Medicare Part B Cost?

In 2025, the standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B is $185.00.

Most people pay this standard amount. However, if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), as reported on your IRS tax return from two years ago, is above a certain threshold, you’ll pay the standard premium plus an additional amount known as an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).

IRMAA is an extra charge added to your monthly premium based on your income level.
